Multi-function renovations.

Living in a condo always means finding good use of space. There are sites dedicated to hacking up regular products like IKEAhacker that share people's creativity.

At it's simplest, it means a 3 foot bookshelf has to be chucked for a 8 foot one, because otherwise you waste 5 feet of available airspace, or sofa beds and expanding dinner tables. Decisions we've made included a stereo system built into the sub-woofer rather then two separate components, and centralizing our house computer to service the den, kitchen and living room.

Right now, I'm trying to put up some floating shelves that I got from the last Umbra sale to make use of the wall space near the ceiling in the den, and possibly eliminate one bookshelf in it's entirety, and putting a table beneath it, so we can make ourselves a proper office for our academic family, without sacrificing the guest room capability our den currently possesses.

Ahh, but the walls are concrete. It's been taking me somewhere between 20-30 minutes to drill each hole, and there are 24 holes between the 3 shelves. And because the first shelf is high up there, my arms are getting tired, and one week into the job, I've got only half the holes done.

After a bit more rigorous research into drilling into concrete, I thought that the impact driver I had could help me out. Unfortunately, my 9-in-1 power tool combo doesn't come with any attachments for drill bits. More searching found out what I really need is a hammer-drill to make mincemeat of the concrete wall. Alas, I don't have one, and neither does my one tool friend. (I had two, but one moved away)

That got me thinking. My church community out in the suburbs probably has tons of equipment that I could use. Unfortunately, I have no idea who has what. I'd read somewhere, but can't find the link, about some communities that post things they have to share (kind of like an intra-craislist), but we dont' have that... All I've got is this space... and Facebook.

Anyone with a hammer drill?

You should definitely ask Don Morrison - that man is the handicraft genius!

Thanks for the advice, but the facebook import of this post found me Sam's hammer drill, and very quickly I might add! :)

Hey, I love your apartment. It's practically an IKEA showroom

You do, eh? But you haven't seen it... At least not in this post!
